It’s been just a little over two weeks since I said a tearful and loving good-bye to my Chief Motivating Officer, best friend, and co-pilot. Lucy was an incredible soul that graced my life journey for nearly 13 years. Always there for the ups and downs – including the planning and execution of launching my own business. It’s still hard to believe she’s crossed the Rainbow Bridge and no longer nudging me under my desk.
In the midst of the sorrow, life and business move on. I continue to serve my clients, build partnerships, and grow the BIG Breakthrough community. Staying busy helps ease the pain. But today I wanted to share with you something special from the heart. To gift you a bit of the wisdom I learned from loving and caring for my beautiful pup.
From silly antidotes, road trips, camping, hiking, beach combing and just hanging out at home, Lucy left me many nuggets of wisdom. I could easily write a book – as I’m sure many of you with pets in your lives could do – on the life lessons she taught me. Here are just a few of my favorites:
Every morning, Lucy had her routine. After a bit of snuggle time, she would go outside. Walking out into the back yard, she would find a perfect place to sit. I loved to watch her soaking in the sun, listening to the birds, and watching the squirrels climb the trees.
She sat upright – as if she was meditating – taking pause to savor the day. Five to ten minutes would go by, and then she’d get up, walk around, do her business, and then come in for breakfast.
It was her daily routine, and one that I was always eager to replicate. But something seemed to prevent me from being consistent with a simple 15-minute meditation every morning. Not any more. I sat with her on those last few days we shared. And now I have my own new routine each morning to sit, release resistance, open up and allow.
In my work with clients to create breakthrough results, I have found that to truly be successful, you must take time to disconnect. Pushing hard and working non-stop may create short-term gains, but life as well as business is a marathon – not a sprint. I have found in my own experiences, as well as those of my clients, that taking time to disconnect fuels your energy in a unique and powerful way.
How can you take time out on a daily basis to recharge and refuel? Being mindful of your thoughts and consciously letting go of control is what I mean by disconnecting. Take a walk in the park, listen to music, sit in silence, or just notice the world around you. Give it a try for a week, and let me know what changes you see and feel.
Blaze New Trails
I’ll never forget the first time I took Lucy out for a walk. She was just 5 months old, a spunky 17 pounds, fresh from the shelter (and her spay surgery), and eager to take on the world. She pulled on the leash with such excitement to lead me down the sidewalk – only looking back to make sure I was following.
For months, Lucy would lead the way – pulling me behind her. In training, I was supposed to be teaching her to walk beside me, not ahead of me. But that never happened. Eventually, she stopped pulling, but she always was out in front. And that was ok with me.
Lucy was always very independent. She blazed her own trails – especially when she was off leash. It’s imperative that we also choose to take the road not traveled. When we seek a path that is perfect for us, magic happens. Conformity doesn’t breed success. A willingness to try something new, go against the grain, and take the lead will bring you new ideas and the key to happiness.
Chase What Excites You
Squirrels, rabbits, and the occasional fur pelt on a lure course. Lucy LOVED the chase. And she was super fast! Her excitement was contagious. To say she was oozing with joy would be an understatement.
It took her 10 years to finally catch a squirrel, but that never stopped her from fully enjoying the chase. Even when she did catch a few, her desire to flush out rabbits from the shrubs or tree a squirrel never faded.
Imagine how your life would change if you chased what excited you? My core philosophy is “There are no limits, only choices.” We all have the ability to choose to chase our dreams and achieve them. When we see the world as limitless, opportunities show up in our lives for us to grab.
When you choose to follow your passion, breakthroughs happen and greatness results. It’s about aligning that desire within you with a strategic and structured approach to create success. When is the last time you chased something that excites you?
I’m still coming to terms with the loss of Lucy. I know that she is free – strong, healthy, full of spunk and running fearlessly in the land across the Rainbow Bridge. Those who had the opportunity to meet her know the impact my furry four-legged best friend made on the world. Take these few life lessons and make impact on your own world – for Lucy.
